Before Ann and Fred Lane relocated to Harford County, they regularly rescued abused dogs from their neighborhood in New York City. “We had a friend who would, literally, kidnap dogs that were tied up or abused in some way and we’d drive the dogs all the way down to Maryland Line Rescue . . . After we moved to Bel Air, we saw that there was a need to help with emergency care for animals who were suffering but whose owners couldn’t afford veterinary care.”
Along with Phyllis Nubert, a veterinary technician, the Lanes founded Paws For Life, Harford County, in 1998 as a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance for pet emergency care. The organization works with local veterinary clinics, the Humane Society of Harford County, and rescue groups in the area. With grants from the Snyder Animal Foundation, in Baltimore, and the generosity of friends and family, Paws For Life has been able to help about 100 animals a year. More recently, out of concern for the growing stray population of both dogs and cats, Paws For Life has increasingly funded spay/neuter programs. “There’s also a need for people to be more aware of the problems,” says founder Ann Lane. “We’ve worked with some of the rescue groups in the area to develop outreach programs, to remind people that abandoned animals or suffering animals are everyone’s concern.”
